FIG: Baku forging its reputation as new hotspot for sporting events

As the International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG) prepares to hold its annual Council in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku May 6-7, the city is continuing to forge its reputation as one of the new hotspots for sporting events, reads a message posted on the FIG website.
FIG President Morinari Watanabe and Secretary General Andre Gueisbuhler were received May 2 by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Mehriban Aliyeva, Azerbaijan's First Vice-President, President of the Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation, at their residence, the message said.
“They talked about the country’s love of sports and rapid development of major sporting infrastructure, which enabled Azerbaijan to successfully host the first European Games in 2015,” the message said.
“Since then, Baku, already host of numerous World Cups and FIG Academies, has become a predominant destination in the Gymnastics calendar. It will welcome the 2019 Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships, a qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, and the next FIG Congress in 2018.”
Baku has also hosted three World Cup events in 2017, the latest being last weekend’s Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup, as well as numerous Judges’ courses. Also, this week official FIG meetings will be held in Baku, according to the message.
“About 50 members of the FIG Authorities will take part in the 17th Council this weekend, where important matters regarding the four-year budget, technical rules and the disciplinary code will be discussed,” reads the message.
Also, the Executive Committee meeting is being held on May 4-5, according to the message.
