April 7 saw the start of the Nakhchivan leg of the journey from the Caspian, a precursor to the Baku 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games.

The first stop was Lake Batabat in the Shahbuz region. The lake is about an hour north of the city of Nakhchivan. Surrounded by meadows, this serene mountain lake is renowned for its clear azure water.

Chess enthusiast Murad Aliyarov, the bronze medalist of the European Judo Championship Orkhan Quliyev and the Baku 2015 European Games bronze medalist in boxing Tayfur Aliyev will fill a water vessel with water from Lake Batabat, which will be the centerpiece of the water ceremony.

Afterwards, the “Sport Joys – Regional Sports Event” project was held in Ilham Aliyev Olympic Sports Complex as part of the “Domestic Grassroots” Program. Athlete Ambassador of Baku 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games Haji Aliyev took part in this competition between students, held in order to promote the Games and boost the sports’ popularity among the youth.

The event continued in the evening during the “Water Festival” in the Heydar Aliyev Park. Admission to the festival was free, and viewers enjoyed performances of the dancing ensemble Mirvari, the Honored Artist of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic Huner Aliyev and the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Nakhchivan National Philarmony, as well as a dazzling laser show.

The Journey from Caspian, which will envelop the entirety of Azerbaijan, will reach its next destination on April 9 in Astara region. Starting from the Caspian Sea, this 37 day journey will cover the area of over 3000 km across 15 regions.
