The ferry complex in the port of Kuryk, Kazakhstan is planned to be commissioned in December 2016. The complex is considered to be a strategically important object as it will allow transporting goods to neighboring countries without unloading cars.

The terminal is located on the area of 21 hectares. Main objective of the project is to ensure the transportation of transit cargo from China to Iran, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey and further to Europe.

The complex is focused on handling of consumer goods, grain, petroleum products, liquefied petroleum gas, fertilizers, chemicals and many other goods. The new ferry terminal is expected to allow the country to export oil, polyethylene, iron ore and concentrates to world markets through Baku, Azerbaijan. 16 buildings and facilities are planned to be established at the territory of the complex.

The construction of the Borzhakty-Ersai railway line which will connect the ferry complex with railway network is also under construction. Currently cargo transportation by ferries from Kazakhstan to the ports of the countries located on the shores of the Caspian Sea is possible only through the port of Aktau.

In accordance with the information provided to Trend by the Kazakhstan national centre of transportation and logistics the volume of the freight transferred through Azerbaijan in the first stage of the project will amount to 360,000 tons per year. Azerbaijan is expected to supply about 82,000 tons of freight to Kazakhstan through Kuryk with 32,000 tons being electric equipment, 30,000 tons of consumer goods, 10,000 tons of vehicles and devices.

Kazakhstan plans to increase transit transportation from the current 18 million tons of cargo to 33 million tons in 2020 and to 50 million tons in 2030.

Implementation of the project which is realized within the program “Nurly zhol” began in April 2015.
