Turkmenistan has launched a construction of an enterprise for producing over 60 tons of iodine per year.

The enterprise specialized in the extraction of iodine from salt brines with iodine concentration of 55-200 gram per cubic meters will be constructed in Okarem region on the coast of the Caspian Sea.

Senagatchilar consortium implements the project. Currently, the production facilities of the enterprise are under construction.

The enterprise will use the method of iodine extraction from industrial waters used in the production of hydrocarbons. The project was developed by the Iodobrom Scientific Production Association.

Iodine and its derivatives are indispensable in a wide range of nutritional and pharmaceutical goods. Turkmenistan is among five states of the world with the largest iodine bromide water reserves. More than 90 percent of it is exported, in the local market the iodine is mainly used for iodating of the white salt.

In CIS area, the iodine production is concentrated in Turkmenistan (Cheleken, Nebit Dag), and Azerbaijan (Neftchala). Production in Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan is not associated with oil extraction, as wells are specifically drilled for the production of iodine.
