IAEA suspects Iran possesses undeclared nuclear material

The International Atomic Energy Agency has said it cannot provide full guarantee that Iran does not have undeclared nuclear material and that the entire atom in the country is peaceful.

UN nuclear agency’s Director General Yukiya Amano said in a report to the Board of Governors released on November 26 that the agency continues to verify the non-diversion of nuclear material declared by Iran under its safeguards agreement.

“But we are not able to provide full assurance about the absence of undeclared nuclear material and activities in Iran, and therefore to conclude that all nuclear material in Iran is in within the peaceful activities,” Amano said, IAEA reported.

In the meantime, Iranian deputy foreign minister Abbas Araqchi said the IAEA and its Board of Governors need to make a choice between the possible military dimensions to Tehran’s nuclear program and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

He said in case, the IAEA director or the Board of Governors present their report in a way which violates the agreed commitments, Iran will also stop implementing the JCPOA.

The IAEA and Iranian nuclear negotiators held a session on November 24 in Vienna to discuss the agency’s upcoming report on the PMD to Tehran’s nuclear program.

Araqchi concluded that if the agency fails to settle the PMD, Iran will stop implementing the agreement.

Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers – the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia plus Germany – finalized the text of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in Vienna on July 14.

Under the JCPOA, limits will be put on Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for, among other things, the removal of all nuclear-related economic and financial bans against the Islamic republic.

Iran and the IAEA also signed in Vienna a roadmap regarding the Islamic Republic’s nuclear work on the same day of clinching the final nuclear accord.
