Tehran to cease implementing nuke deal if West violates terms
A senior Iranian nuclear negotiator has said that if the West
fails to fulfill its commitments regarding the nuclear deal
clinched in July between Tehran and the P5+1 group, Iran will not
keep its commitments either.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its Board of
Governors need to make a choice between the possible military
dimensions (PMD) to Tehran’s nuclear program and the Joint
Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iranian deputy foreign
minister Abbas Araqchi said Nov. 25.
In case, the IAEA director or the Board of Governors present their
report in a way which violates the agreed commitments, the Islamic
Republic of Iran will also stop [implementing] the JCPOA, IRNA news
agency quoted Araqchi Nov. 25.
According to a road-map agreed between Tehran and the IAEA on July
14, the international atomic body is expected to submit a report
clarifying the past and present outstanding issues related to
Iran’s nuclear program by Dec. 15.
The IAEA and Iranian nuclear negotiators held a session on November
24 in Vienna to discuss the agency’s upcoming report on the
possible military dimensions (PMD) to Tehran’s nuclear program.
Araqchi concluded that if the agency fails to settle the PMD, Iran
will stop implementing the agreement.
Under a deal clinched in July between Iran and the world powers,
the nuclear sanctions imposed by the west on Tehran will be lifted
in return for scaling down the Islamic Republic’s nuclear
program.
According to the deal which is known as the JCPOA, Tehran is
committed to reducing the number of its centrifuges.
