World powers need to invite Iran to Syria talks

A Middle East expert and commentator has said that world powers’ invitation of Iran to the Vienna talks on Syria is an indication of destitution.

These countries have invited Iran since they had no other choice to succeed in dealing with the case and their invitation is not out of kindness to Iran, Sadeq Kooshki told Trend October 28.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov held a telephone conversation on Syria for the second time in one week while the United States had invited Iran to the talks earlier the day.

A few days ago, Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurtz also invited Iran to the talks.

Kooshki said since they were not having the really influential countries in the previous Geneva I and Geneva II talks on Syria, the attending countries failed to reach anywhere.

He noted that Iran is a highly influential force on ground in the Syrian conflict and has naturally to be part of the talks.

The talks are aimed at finding a solution to the Syrian crisis which has been lingering for over four years.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has announced it will attend the talks which are to be held on October 30.

While powers such as the US and Russia are engaged in airstrikes in Syria, Iran maintains that it provides military consultation to the army of President Bashar Assad and does not consider any field operation.
