Uzbekistan to electrify railway in east of country

Uzbekistan Railways JSC will electrify a new section of the Pap-Kokand-Andijan railway, which is a continuation of Angren-Pap line by 2020, said the message of the Cabinet of Ministers of Uzbekistan.

The document said that the completion of the construction of Angren-Pap electrified railway line is provided in July 2016, and the cost savings is expected compared to the approved feasibility study (FS) of the project “Construction of Angren-Pap electrified railway line.”

The government of the republic approved the proposal of Uzbekistan Railways for the electrification of the Pap-Kokand-Andijan railway section with a length of 186 kilometers, with the inclusion of these works in the project “Construction of Angren-Pap electrified railway line within its total approved cost”.

Financing of Pap-Kokand-Andijan section electrification will be funded by savings from the Angren-Pap project.

The government allowed Uzbekistan Railways and Uzbekenergo companies to begin the construction of external power supply facilities of Pap-Kokand-Andijan section simultaneously with the design and development of the construction documents.

Uzbekistan started construction of the Angren-Pap new electrified railway in July 2013. The railway line with a length of 129 km would run through the Kamchik pass and link the three oblasts in the east of the country - Andijan, Namangan and Fergana - with the remaining part of Uzbekistan.

The project worth $1.8 billion is financed through the state budget, Uzbek railway company's own funds and loans of the international financial institutes. Construction is to be completed in late 2017.
