Iran starts mass- production of air-based cruise missile

Iran’s defense ministry has launched a production line for air-to-surface cruise missile dubbed “Nasr.”

Nasr is a short-range missile that can precisely hit targets within the 35-kilometer range.

Iran’s Defense Minister, Brigadier General Hossein Dehghan who was present at the inauguration ceremony said the missile enjoys high precision capability, and can be fired by various fighters, the country’s ISNA news agency reported August 25.

The missile does not need support and the fighter can quickly leave the danger zone after firing it, the minister added.

Development of the country’s missile capabilities in order to strengthen the combat power of the armed forces and increase effective deterrence power are among the main strategies of the defense ministry, Dehghan said.

He further stressed that by delivering the Nasr missile to the air forces of the Army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) their operational and tactical capabilities will increase significantly.

Iranian media outlets report that Iran has made great achievements in its defense sector and attained self-sufficiency in producing essential military equipment and systems in recent years.

Tehran established an arms development program during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s to counter the weapons embargo imposed on it by the U.S. and its Western allies.

Since 1992, Iran has been manufacturing its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles, radars, boats, submarines and fighter planes. Iran also unveiled its first long-range Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in 2010.
