Georgia plans to develop its transport and transit potential through the construction of the new Anaklia port on the Black Sea coast.

The Government Commission of Georgia is selecting a company to develop the new project, according to the Transport Policy Department of the Georgian Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.

The Georgian government has set up a commission, headed by the PM Garibashvili, in order to review applications submitted for participation.

Some 12 companies have submitted their proposals, expressing their own interest in construction and operation of the deep-water port. The Commission has chosen only two of them.

Anaklia Industrial EcoPark and Port Ltd. & Power Construction Corporation of China Ltd. and JSC Anaklia Development Consortium (Conti International LLC-and TBC Holding LLC) are the most likely candidates for this role according to the Commission's decision.

At the time of selection, the commission will focus on the investor, who would be responsible for providing equity and attracting debt financing for the project. Furthermore, the investor must attract appropriate cargo volumes for the new port.

A German company hired by the Georgian Government has assessed the technical and financial side of the proposals.

The port will be located on the Black Sea coast, near the Anaklia resort in western Georgia, will sprawl over 1,000 hectares, and have access to a deep sea canyon.

The government noted that the construction of Anaklia Port, the development of logistics and industry zones, and the construction of an airport and liquid gas terminal are planned to develop the wider area in western Georgia.

The Anaklia port would become one of the Georgia’s main attractions and is expected to gain historical importance.

The main advantages of this port will be its strategic location, which opens new doors for transport and transit development in Georgia, particularly given the revival of the Great Silk Road.

Moreover, the Anaklia Port will provide the safe navigation and provide the possibility of transiting PANAMAX-type vessels during the year.

In addition, a single window in the port is planned in order to accelerate and simplify all necessary procedures.
