The expansion of trade turnover is an important factor for the development of bilateral relations between Indonesia and Uzbekistan.

This was announced by Indonesian Ambassador to Uzbekistan Anak Agung Gde Alita Santiku at a meeting with journalists, Uzbek media reported on July 30.

He said that currently, investing in infrastructure designed to connect the eastern and western parts of Indonesia and the construction of a port is a priority for the development of the country.

The ambassador noted the similarity of the two countries in this regard, as Uzbekistan is also actively implementing infrastructure projects. He also said that there is great prospect to develop trade relations between Indonesia and Uzbekistan.

"There are several products that interests Indonesia, and those which interests Uzbekistan. For example, Indonesia produces textile products while Uzbekistan has cotton. There is a very large production of agricultural goods in Indonesia, including coffee and tea. And everybody knows that all in Uzbekistan like drinking tea," he noted.

The envoy also stressed the huge tourism prospects of the two countries. The ambassador believes that there is a real opportunity to significantly increase the flow of tourists from Uzbekistan to Indonesia and vice versa.

He said that an intensive exchange of visits, including tourism visits, plays an important role in strengthening bilateral relations.

Indonesia recognized independence of Uzbekistan on December 28, 1991. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on June 23, 1992.

At present, the relations are governed by more than 20 bilateral intergovernmental documents. The basic principles of the Uzbek-Indonesian relations were fixed in the Joint Statement (1992) and the Joint Declaration on the Principles of Relations and Cooperation (1995).
