Post-sanctions situation can threat Iran ’s economy

A senior Iranian economic expert has refuted worries that the removal of sanctions on Iran may lead to new situations that threaten the country’s economy.

Right now some economic experts and managers inside Iran predict that once international sanctions on Iran are removed, economic rent groups may misuse the situation, foreign companies may enter the Iranian market with trade intentions rather than productive plans, Iran may not be ready to take in a large load of investment in a short term, or the mere fact that Iran’s credit risk is unclear may cause further problems.

“I am not worried that something very different may happen than what already has,” Said Laylaz, economist and the former presidential advisor told Trend July 8.

Such threats have their roots in problems that have been afflicting the Iranian economy in the past, he said. However, the economist noted, inflation may come in the short run due to Iran’s access to new financial resources.

Yet everything depends on the way the Iranian government handles the situation, he stated.

The Iranian government needs to make adjustments and change its economic policies in order to prepare for the situations arising after the removal of sanctions, Laylaz added.

The economic expert said although right now things are not that optimistic in the economy of Iran, the least award the removal of the sanctions brings is that a hurdle is lifted on the government’s path to develop the economy.

“The removal of the sanctions is not a propelling power per se, but once the sanctions are lifted, then there will be the chance for the government to exert its policies to improve the situations,” he said.

Iran is expecting the removal of sanctions on its economy soon. The country is in talks with the group P5+1 (the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany) over its nuclear program, which are expected to end in a deal that would lift the sanctions.
