Turkmenistan OKs Caspian Sea protocol

Turkmenistan’s parliament, the Majlis, adopted a resolution ratifying the Protocol for Protection of the Caspian Sea against Pollution from Land Based Sources and Activities.

The document is a protocol to the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Caspian Sea’s Marine Environment also known as the Tehran Convention signed in November 2003.

The Tehran Convention is the first legally binding agreement ratified by all the coastal states.

It sets the main directions in the management of human impact to the marine environment, protection and reproduction of the Caspian Sea’s biological resources, and the procedural issues in making joint decisions by the Caspian states.

Turkmenistan ratified the Tehran Convention itself in August 2004 and on August 12, 2006 after ratification by all the Caspian countries the convention officially came into force.

The Caspian Sea is the world’s largest intracontinental reservoir not associated with any ocean.

The sea plays an important role in shaping of the climate.
