Uzbek leader to visit South Korea

Uzbek President Islam Karimov will pay a three-day visit to the Republic of Korea next week, South Korean Yonhap news agency reported on May 22 citing the South Korean presidential press-service.

The development of cooperation in the area of security, infrastructure and other sectors will be considered at the meeting of the two presidents - Islam Karimov and Park Geun-hye on May 28.

This will be the first official visit of Islam Karimov abroad after being reelected president in the March election. This is perceived by Seoul as Uzbekistan’s commitment to develop the relations with South Korea. Earlier, President Karimov visited the Republic of Korea seven times.

Korean leader Park Geun-hye paid a state visit to Uzbekistan in June 2014.

Uzbekistan is the largest trading partner of Korea in Central Asia. A large diaspora of ethnic Koreans in the region lives here.

As of 2014, the trade turnover volume between the two countries amounted to $1.9 billion.
