Norwegian Statoil defines its position on Iran

The Norwegian company Statoil sees a significant resource potential in Iran, but is still in compliance with the relevant sanctions imposed on that country, the company spokesperson Knut Rostad told Trend.

He said that the company currently does not conduct activities in Iran.

“We closed our office in Tehran in 2013 and do not have any activities in Iran today,” Rostad said.

The Statoil spokesperson of said that the company will continue to abide by all relevant sanctions against Iran that are still in place.

“Iran is a country with significant resource potential,” he said. “We are monitoring the developments, but I do not want to speculate in the outcome of the negotiations.”

Statoil has been the offshore operator of development of the sixth, seventh and eighth phases of South Pars gas condensate field in the Persian Gulf. In 2009, the company completed the development, and then the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) took over the operatorship.

In summer of 2013, Statoil closed its office in Iran. The company said it would not invest in Iran under the circumstances, but remains committed to fulfilling its contractual obligations regarding the South Pars deposit.

In early April 2015, Iran and P5+1 group of international mediators (the US, France, Britain, Russia, China and Germany) failed to agree on the fundamental parameters of the future agreement on Tehran's nuclear program in Lausanne after long consultations.

They announced the development of a framework political agreement, which should form the basis of a future comprehensive agreement on international guarantees of the exclusively peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions from the country.

Iran and the P5+1 group must conclude a final agreement on Iran's nuclear program by June 30.

Earlier, the Iranian news agency Fars, with a reference to an informed source reported that oil and trade delegations of countries, some of which are EU members, have recently visited Iran. Members of these delegations met with senior representatives of Tehran on the issue of imports of oil and gas of the country, as well as investment in Iran's oil production.
