European Week starts in Georgia

By Mushvig Mehdiyev

A week-long event dedicated to highlighting Georgia's cooperation with the European Union was launched in Tbilisi on May 4.

The official opening ceremony of the celebration was held at Tbilisi City Council, with an exhibition of comic books and a presentation of the "European way – it is my choice" illustrated booklet.

For the next six days, various activities will be held across the whole country, including festivals, lectures, public events and a diverse range of cultural and artistic presentations.

The event aims to raise public awareness on the current cooperation between Georgia and the EU, to demonstrate various European cultures and traditions, and to detail Georgia’s progress towards EU integration.

Organizers noted that the European Week is one of the most important events envisaged by the Action Plan of the EU Integration Communication and Information Strategy.

On the first day of the European Week, former Latvian President, Valdis Zatlers delivered a public lecture at Tbilisi State University.

Before the European Week will end on May 11, many other activities have been scheduled, including simulation of the European Parliament by Georgian students, a Youth Forum on the issues of Georgia's European integration and debates on the topic of the EU among Georgian students.

The Georgian leadership announced overtly that the country belongs to the European civilization and that it wants to be part of the old continent. Knocking on Europe’s door serves Georgia's strong desire to enter the European family.

Although Tbilisi knows there is little room left at the European table, the country is still pursuing its European ambition, keen to press ahead. The AA deal with the EU is an "immense progress" for Georgia in terms of integrating into the EU, or at least so believe the country's authorities.
