Uzbekistan’s presidential election ends with 91% turnout

The presidential election finalized in Uzbekistan on March 29 with a voter turnout of over 91 percent.

Mirzo-Ulugbek Abdusalov, the chairperson of the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan said at a briefing on 29 March that all polling stations in Uzbekistan closed their doors at 20:00.

He said 18.928 million people from 20.798 million registered voters cast their votes in the presidential elections. He added that the preliminary results will be announced on March 30.

The presidential elections in Uzbekistan were declared valid in accordance with article 35 of the law "On Elections of the President of Uzbekistan". In line with the legislation of Uzbekistan, more than 33 percent of registered voters should turn up at the polls to recognize them as valid.

Abdusalov added that the CEC did not receive any information on violations of election legislation during the voting.

About 300 observers from five international organizations – the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Commonwealth of Independent States, Shanghai Cooperation Organization, World Association of electoral bodies and Organization of the Islamic Cooperation, as well as 43 states – participated in the elections.

In addition, more than 35,000 observers from political parties, representatives of the media participated in the voting process.

Some 72 observers from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and the CIS Executive Committee were accredited as part of this mission.

Azerbaijani delegation observing the presidential election in Uzbekistan didn’t register any violation of law during the voting.

Aydin Abbasov, a member of the delegation, an Azerbaijani MP said the election was organized at a very high level, in line with the law.

Current president Islam Karimov, 77, has led the country since the late 1980s.Karimov faced three purely nominal rivals. In the previous election in 2007, he won 91 percent of the vote.
