SCO mission starts work at Uzbekistan's presidential election
The observer mission from the Shanghai Cooperation Organization,
headed by the Secretary-General Dmitry Mezentsev arrived in
Uzbekistan, in order to observe the presidential election, the
Republican press-center for election coverage said on March 26.
The Central Election Commission held a meeting with representatives
of the mission. The CEC Chairman Abdusalomov familiarized the
guests with the work done in the framework of the Program of
measures for the preparation and conduct of presidential
election.
During the meeting it was noted that all activities in the
framework of the election campaign are held within the period
specified in strict accordance with national legislation on
election. The preparation and holding of election are being held in
open and transparent manner with the participation of observers
from international organizations and foreign states.
All candidates are given equal rights to the use of media
opportunities, meetings with voters and other forms and methods of
campaigning.
The process of early voting for those who for any reason will not
be able to be at their place of residence on election day began on
March 19.
The SCO Secretary-General Dmitry Mezentsev said that the mission of
observers from the SCO comprised of 10 people - representing the
member states of the SCO. The Mission observers operate
autonomously and independently, guided by the principles of
political neutrality, impartiality, are basing their decisions on
personal observation and factual material.
It was earlier reported that the observer Mission from the
organization during the monitoring of the preparation and conduct
of the parliamentary election of 2014 familiarized with the
activity of 73 district election commissions, located in Tashkent
and Tashkent region. Following the election, the mission made the
statement that the elections were transparent and democratic.
The presidential election in Uzbekistan is scheduled for Mar.29, while the pre-election campaign in the country started on Dec.26, 2014. In total, more than 300 foreign observers will watch the presidential election, according to the CEC.
The presidential candidates are: incumbent President Islam Karimov from the Liberal Democratic Party, the member of the parliamentary faction, chairman of the committee for democratic institutions, NGOs and citizens’ self-government bodies, Akmal Saidov - from the National Democratic Party Milly Tiklanish; the chairman of the Central Council of the People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan Hotamzhon Ketmonov - from the PDPU, the chairman of the executive committee of the Social Democratic Party Adolat, Narimon Umarov - from SDP.
