Georgian Foreign Ministry prepares for Merkel, Kerry visit

Georgian Foreign Ministry is holding preparations for the visits of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and US Secretary of State John Kerry, speaker of Georgian Foreign Ministry David Kereselidze said on March 23.

He said Merkel could visit Georgia in H2 of 2015. “I can’t specify the exact date.”

Kereselidze said in a briefing that preparations for Kerry’s visit to the country are also underway, RIA Novosti reported March 23.

Earlier, Georgian Foreign Ministry said that Kerry could visit Georgia "soon." The country’s Foreign Minister Tamar Beruchashvili said that the US secretary of state would take part in the plenary session on the implementation of the Charter on Strategic Partnership between Georgia and the United States. However she didn’t specify the date of the session.

The Charter on Strategic Partnership between Georgia and the United States was signed on January 9, 2009 in Washington. Working groups were created on some issues under the Charter in June 2009. The document envisages expansion of partnership and cooperation between the two countries in the sphere of defense and security, economy, energy, democratic reforms, diplomacy and culture.
