Iran lifts ban on chicken import from France

Jamaleddin Javidi, Iranian Veterinary Organization’s Deputy Director of Health and Prevention said that the country has lifted a ban on importing fertilized eggs and chicken from France.

He said that the Veterinary Organization lifted the ban 10 days ago after tests showed that imports from France were healthy, Mehr news agency reported February 26.

Javidi further stated that besides regular checks, since 2006 Iran been carrying out seasonal checks across the country to make sure that poultry consumed as food are not infected with diseases.

Iran banned imports of chicken and eggs from EU, after bird flu cases were reported in England and the Netherlands in November.

Bird flu was found on a duck farm in England on Nov.18, days after it was discovered in Dutch chickens, forcing authorities to destroy poultry and restrict exports.

Health officials said the outbreak may have been brought to Europe by wild birds migrating from Asia where millions of South Korean farm birds had to be destroyed.
