Iran to up energy prices

The Iranian parliament has allowed the ministries of oil and energy to charge customers with more amounts of money next Iranian fiscal year (starting Mar. 21) than the current year, Fars news agency reported.

Addressing the national budget bill for the country’s next fiscal year, the Majlis allowed the National Iranian Gas Company to charge each customer (housing unit) with 1,000 rials (27,600 rials making USD1) more than the current year every two months.

The MPs also authorized the Iranian Ministry of Energy to charge each housing unit as its customer every two months with 500 rials more than the amount it did the current year.

The sums under consideration will be no part of the organizations’ revenues and are tax-free.

The Iranian government has increased energy carriers' prices twice since December 2010 as part of the Subsidy Reform plan, but, on the other hand the country's national currency, the rial, has lost around two third of its value since then.

Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said in June that the country's citizens are paying less than 9 percent of their consumed liquid fuel price.

He said that the government is paying the rest of the cost via subsidies.

Head of Iran Energy Efficiency organization (IEEO), Hossein Sajjadi, previously said that annually the equivalent of 1,600 million barrels of oil was being consumed domestically.
