Germany is on verge of ratifying the Georgia-European Union (EU) Association Agreement, a top German official said.

Norbert Lammert, President of the Bundestag said Germany would ratify the important Georgia-EU document in the shortest possible time.

Lammert embarked on a four-day official visit to Georgia, where he met with Georgia’s Foreign Minister Tamar Beruchashvili on the first day of the trip.

Lammert reaffirmed the readiness of the German government's legislative and executive branches to promote Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

"Reforms implemented in Georgia under the AA have the right dynamics and Georgia should continue implementing reforms in a timely manner," Lammert said

Beruchashvili, in turn, praised the close friendly relations between Georgia and Germany.

"This visit is a clear and firm demonstration of support. The German Bundestag is ready for taking concrete steps, including the timely ratification of the AA,” she said following the meeting.

Beruchashvli noted that the German side expressed its readiness to intensify all tools for political and economic support for Georgia.

On another note, she briefed Lammert about the situation in Georgia’s occupied territories and informed about Georgia's vision into the problems relating to regional security.

The sides also discussed adoption of a resolution backing Georgia’s European integration.

A support from the international community and the German side is of great importance, as the stability of Georgia and the whole EU Eastern neighborhood are still facing serious challenges, said Beruchashvili.

Lammert is expected to have meetings also with President Giorgi Margvelashvili and Parliament Speaker David Usupashvili within his visit. He will also sit with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, as well as the representatives of civil society and head of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia.

Lammert's latest visit to Georgia took place in 2006.
