EU backs Georgia's migration policy

The European Union reiterated its support to Georgia in border and migration management policies.

The EU believes that following the signing of a historic free trade deal on June 27, 2014, Georgia requires assistance from the EU member-states to deal with new and unfamiliar procedures.

Maruta Znotina, Senior Customs Officer from the National Customs Board of Latvia, shared her expertise through a training dedicated to matters of Rules of Origin with her Georgian counterparts, as part of ongoing support for the Revenue Service of Georgia under the EU-funded project Enhanced Cooperation for Secure Borders and Safe Migration.

This collaboration in training preparation was suggested by the International Organisation for Migration to help consolidate the new training material within Georgia's existing RS curriculum.

Maka Khvedelidze at the RS International Relations Department hailed the training, saying it was important for identifying an expert with the specific knowledge.

The EU-funded project Enhanced Cooperation for Secure Borders and Safe Migration, which is implemented by IOM aims to provide special capacity building activities for the Georgian authorities in enhancing border and migration management policies and institutional approaches in line with the EU-Georgia Agreements and action plans, the Visa Liberalisation Action Plan in particular.

The project started on 15 December 2013 and will continue until June 2017.
