Uzbekistan draws Japanese investments

A package of investment, loan agreements and technical assistance projects worth $3.8 billion was signed in Tokyo following the 12th meeting of the Uzbek-Japanese Committee on Economic Cooperation on January 26-28, the Uzbek foreign ministry said.

The Japanese investments and loans are drawn for the projects of such areas as electric power, oil and gas, chemical, textile, electro-technical, telecommunications, tourism, transport infrastructure.

The leading areas of Uzbekistan’s economy were presented during the committee meeting. Over 200 representatives of Japanese companies, banks and governmental agencies attended the meeting, the statement reads.

In their speeches, Japanese finance minister, foreign minister, economy minister, minister of trade and industry stressed that the Japanese government will actively and consistently support the efforts of Japanese companies and financial institutions to expand and to develop the trade-economic, investment and financial cooperation with Uzbekistan.

Shinzo Abe, Japanese Prime Minister received an Uzbek delegation headed by Rustam Azimov, First Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister. A personal message from Uzbek President Islam Karimov was delivered to Abe.

As part of the visit to Japan, the Uzbek delegation also held the talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Taro Aso, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Yoichi Miyazawa, chairman of the Bank of Japan Haruhiko Kuroda, management of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), state agencies, leading Japanese companies and banks.

The amount of Japanese investments in Uzbekistan's economy exceeds $ 2.3 billion. Japan is investing in the projects in such areas as railway transport, oil and gas, power engineering, mining, motor-car construction, telecommunications, electronics, textile.

The representative offices of such big Japanese corporations as "Mitsui", "Mitsubishi", "Itochu", "Marubeni" are open in Uzbekistan.
