Tehran says “very close” to reach nuclear deal

By Sara Rajabova

Following the two-day talks between the Iranian and U.S. representatives, the Iranian officials said the sides are close to reaching a final deal.

Iranian president Hassan Rouhani said the country is "very close" to clinching a deal with global powers on its nuclear program, Press TV reported.

Iranian side once again noted that a political will is needed to yield results more quickly in the talks to resolve the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear energy program.

Rouhani reiterated that Iran is firmly standing on its nuclear rights while it also wants to ensure the international community about the peaceful nature of its nuclear activities.

After the talks in Swiss city of Zurich on January 23-24, Abbas Araqchi, the deputy Iranian foreign minister for legal and international affairs, described as constructive a deputy-level meeting between his country and the United States.

The Iranian official said the sides entered into discussions on different subjects, especially important subjects such as uranium enrichment and sanctions, however, noted that entering details did not translate into the conclusion of a definitive agreement.

In the meantime, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif is to appear before parliament following a controversy over a promenade with his American counterpart during intense nuclear negotiations in Geneva, Reuters reported.

Zarif had a 15-minute walk down Geneva sidewalks with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry during discussions on January 14.

This fact has caused confusion among Iranian conservative politicians.

In particular, the 21 members of parliament signed a petition calling on the minister to provide an explanation. The petition called for prevention of such "friendly communication between ministers of Iran and the United States."

Iran and the P5+1 countries - the US, France, the UK, China, Russia, and Germany – are trying to sign an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program by March 1 and finalize the technical details of the deal by July 1.

The two sides have already missed two major deadlines to clinch such a deal after they signed an interim agreement in Geneva in November 2013.

The scale of Iran’s uranium enrichment and the timetable for the lifting of anti-Iran sanctions are seen as major sticking points in the ongoing negotiations.
