Iran starts large-scale drills
Iranian army has started a large-scale military drill on
December 25 morning near the strategic Strait of Hormuz through
which one fifth of the world oil supply passes, IRINN TV
reported.
The exercise dubbed “Mohammad Rasoulallah” will cover an area of
2.2 million square kilometers from the country’s south east
territory, east of the Strait of Hormuz to the southern parts of
the Gulf of Aden.
The six-day military exercise includes Iranian navy, air force,
ground units and the Khatam al-Anbia air defense base.
The Islamic Republic military officials said that the transferring
the experiences of veteran army commanders to young generation as
well as displaying Iran’s military powers are among the exercises’
goals.
Various types of warships, destroyers, submarines, missiles,
aircraft and helicopters would be used in the drill.
The commander of Iran’s land forces, Brigadier General Ahmad Reza
Pourdastan said the tactical battle and ways to combat new threats
will be worked out during the exercises, and during the exercises
in the desert real bullets will be used.
Pourdastan added that the drills will also involve the unmanned
aerial vehicles (UAVs), which will take pictures and organize
attacks.
Ahead of holding the military exercise Iranian military officials
announced that the Islamic Republic has warned several
“trans-regional” spy planes including U-2 which were operating near
the country’s flight information region (FIR) to stay away from
Iranian airspace.
