Kyrgyzstan hopes to become a full-fledged member of the Eurasian Economic Union by May 1, 2015, President Almazbek Atambayev said after a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Moscow on December 23.

“We have just signed an agreement on joining of Kyrgyzstan to the Eurasian Economic Union. To this end, we discussed very important issues. The negotiations were difficult, but I want to say that the agreement specifies clear and fair parameters of joining of Kyrgyzstan [to the EEU]. It defines common customs tariff and terms of the agreement. It also sets the date of application of the common customs tariff and the abolition of customs control on the Kyrgyz-Kazakh border,” he noted.

He expressed hope that Kyrgyzstan will become a full-fledged member of the EEU by May 9, 2015, the jubilee of the Great Patriotic War.

“I think we will keep our word, and all pledges will be fulfilled by May 1,”Atambayev added.

Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Russia signed an agreement on the establishment of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) on May 29.

The agreement consists of four large sections, including about 1,000 pages, 28 chapters, 118 articles and 32 applications.

The main conditions for joining the organization are as follow: having unified tariffs and technical regulations, harmonizing labor and immigration legislation and establishing a unified banking system.
