Margvelashvili meets with U.S. Department of State official

Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili met with the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, Kurt Tong, on October 29.

The diplomats mulled the cooperation between Georgia and the U.S, as well as deepening bilateral relations in the economic field.

Margvelashvili drew attention to the significance of the free trade with the U.S, which is seen as an opportunity to activate the Charter on Strategic Partnership concluded between the two countries.

The sides also focused on the importance of increasing direct investments from the U.S.

Margvelashvili further spoke about the progress in Georgia after it signed an Association Agreement with the EU. He stressed that Georgia plays an important role in ensuring Europe's energy security, as well as it is a connecting link between Europe and Asia.

Following the meeting, Tong said they also discussed the strategic issues in regard with the Russia and other countries of the region. "Margvelashvili has a clear and accurate stance on those issues," he said.

The U.S. provides immense political, military, financial and humanitarian assistance to Georgia. It has become one of the leading guarantors of Georgia's sovereignty. World's strongest power has always reiterated its support to the European and Euro-Atlantic integration of the South Caucasus nation. Georgia is also playing a significant role in the energy plans of the U.S. as it sees the former Soviet country as s favorable transit country for the Caspian oil and gas resources.
