Rouhani calls for punishing culprits of acid attacks

Following the national outrage over cases of acid attacks on Iranian women, President Hassan Rouhani has ordered the relevant organizations to find culprits behind the recent inhumane assaults in the central city of Isfahan.

Rouhani on October 23 tasked the Ministries of the interior, intelligence and justice with launching an investigation into the sensitive cases after he was briefed about the acid attacks against young women in Isfahan, Press TV reported.

Around ten women have been badly injured after having acid thrown on their faces by unidentified men in recent weeks. According to the reports, the victims were targeted because they were wearing clothes that could be deemed inappropriate.

All of the victims have been young women who were attacked on busy main streets by male motorcyclists or passengers throwing acid on their faces. The women have suffered third-degree burns on their faces, necks, chests and hands, and will require cosmetic surgery.

Rouhani also condemned the "inhuman acts" and expressed sympathy with the victims of the attacks.

Reports of a spate of acid attacks against women in Isfahan have triggered grave concerns among the Iranian public and led to widespread speculations in the press and social media.

Thousands protested in Isfahan on October 22 to demand security for women.

Unfortunately, the heinous crime has not been limited to Isfahan alone, in recent days a number of young women in capital Tehran have also been attacked by splashing acid at their faces.

Due to the cruel attacks, many women in Isfahan fear of going out.

Iranian authorities said security forces have arrested a number of suspects in connection with the attacks, but have not confirmed claims that the women were attacked because they were not dressed appropriately as required by the Islamic dress code.

Iranian Judiciary spokesman Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i on October 20 pledged serious and prompt action regarding the attacks. He vowed maximum punishment possible for the perpetrators.

He described the acid attacks as unfair, murderous and violent and said, "The issue will be examined immediately and the perpetrators will be given the maximum punishment possible."

Women in Iran have been required by law, since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, to dress modestly and not wear cosmetics. The enforcement of morals is one of the duties of the Basij militia.
