New power plant opened in Georgia

Kazbegi Hydro Power Plant was put into operation in the north of Georgia on October 16.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by Georgian Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze, who said that the plant was constructed through domestic investments.

He said the implementation of such projects allows to strengthen the economy of country's regions, reduce the migration level and provide the population with job opportunities.

"Kazbegi power plant will probably allow to resolve such acute problem as the migration of population from the mountainous regions. Also, it will promote the creation of favorable social conditions for the population," the minister said.

Kaladze said the total capacity of Georgia's power supply system will increase as a result of commissioning of the Kazbegi power plant.

"We should realize that all sectors of economy, all projects in this sphere are interrelated and the joint efforts will ensure the country's development," Kaladze added.

The installed capacity of Kazbegi plant is equal to six megawatts.

Previously, some environmental NGOs and Georgia's Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection spoke against the construction of this power plant.
