Iran opens "Sacred Defense Week" with military parade

The Iranian army has staged military parades in various cities of the country including the capital, Tehran on September 22 on the first day of "Sacred Defense Week."

Iranian armed forces' parades were held to honor the 34th anniversary of defense against Iraq's invasion of Iran under former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, the Iranian media reported.

All units of Iranian army as well as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) participated at the parades.

In Tehran, the ceremony marking the "Sacred Defense Week" opened at the mausoleum of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini with a speech by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

Iran's military officials, military attaches of foreign missions in Iran, and prominent public figures also attended the event.

The latest achievements of Iran in the military sphere were demonstrated during the parade.

The two indigenous missile defense systems- Fath 2 radar, as well as Sadeq 1 drone were unveiled in the ceremony.

The long-range Fath 2 radar system is equipped with the state-of art technologies to identify the Iranian aircrafts from the enemy's. It is also able to detect drones.

The Sadeq 1 drone is able to carry out radar system and electronic training missions at altitudes as high as 25 thousand feet.

Each year, from the 1980's, the day of Iraq's attack on Iran is marked as the opening of the "Sacred Defense Week" in the country. The Iran-Iraq war began on September 22, 1980 with the attack of Iraqi army to Iran's Khuzestan province. The war ended on August 20, 1988 with the signing of a ceasefire agreement and since then the borders of the two countries have remained in a pre-war state.

The imposed war is commemorated in Iran as eight years of "Sacred defense". Each year, Iranian armed forces stage nationwide military parades to mark the event.
