Turkmenistan stops using ODS
The major ozone-depleting substances (ODS) were withdrawn from
the use in Turkmenistan as a result of active nature conservation
measures, Turkmen Nature Protection Ministry reported.
The ODS include freons, which are widely used in refrigerating
equipment, all kinds of chemicals, solvents and reagents for
fighting fires.
"Turkmenistan is working to preserve its own unique nature, for the
rational use of natural resources, regeneration of water, land and
biological resources, reduction of air pollution, fighting
desertification, expanding the tree-planting areas, and the
environmental advocacy," the ministry said.
Turkmenistan in 1993 joined a number of UN environmental
conventions, including the Vienna Convention for the Protection of
the Ozone Layer and the Montreal Protocol on Substances that
Deplete the Ozone Layer.
In 1999, the Ozone Office was created within the Nature Protection
Ministry of Turkmenistan.
"Keeping a strong commitment to international obligations,
Turkmenistan continues further expansion of cooperation aimed at
joint and coordinated settlement of global environmental problems
as part of international environmental conventions, including the
ozone layer's preservation," the ministry said.
