Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan to mull trade issues

The 10th meeting of the joint Uzbek-Turkmen commission on trade-economic, scientific-technical and cultural cooperation will be held in Tashkent on July 31.

The agenda of the commission will include the discussion of further cooperation expansion in trade, transport and energy sectors, agriculture and water management, science, technology, culture, sports and tourism, according to the statement, a source at the Uzbek government circles told Trend news agency.

The bilateral meetings are planned to be held among the Uzbek ministers, heads of departments and the members of the Turkmen delegation.

The previous meeting of the joint Uzbek-Turkmen commission on was held in Ashgabat in November 2013.

Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan have an agreement on economic cooperation signed by the presidents in October 2012.

Under the deal, the two countries will strengthen cooperation in further development of trade-economic relations. It will be reached by creating favorable conditions for intensifying bilateral trade, increasing the volumes and a range of mutual supply of goods and services, as well as establishing direct business contacts among the Uzbek and Turkmen businesses.

Currently, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan are involved in several large projects, including the construction of the "Central Asia-China" pipeline.

The parties also continue working to diversify the transport corridors and routes for entering foreign markets, creating favorable conditions for the transit of goods of the third countries.

The volume of mutual trade turnover of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan has more than tripled for the last five years, presently standing at $500 million.

Uzbekistan exports fertilizers, construction materials, fruits and vegetables, electrical and mechanical equipment, vehicles, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, services to Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan supplies oil products, propylene polymers, sulfuric acid to Uzbekistan.
