Georgian FM hopes for Ukraine’s contribution in resolving conflicts

Georgian Foreign Ministry hopes that Ukraine, chairing the OSCE, will make a "significant contribution" to the resolution of conflicts in the South Caucasus, Georgian Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze said on June 18 in Tbilisi at a joint news conference with Ukrainian counterpart Leonid Kozhara.

"We had a very fruitful meeting. Conversation touched on bilateral Georgian-Ukrainian relations as well as provision of stability and security in the region," she said, noting that the parties have expressed a desire to organize as many meetings as possible at the highest level.

Panjikidze stressed that Ukraine holds the presidency of the OSCE, and conflict resolution in the South Caucasus has been designated during the meeting as one of the main priorities in this area.

"We very much hope that our friend Ukraine will contribute to the solution of many problems affecting Georgia," the minister said.

According to her, Ukraine and Georgia share common European aspirations. Panjikidze expressed hope that these aspirations will be supported at the EU Vilnius summit.

Kozhara stressed that Ukraine intends to participate actively in the resolution of conflicts in the region.

"There is no alternative to peaceful resolution, and therefore, it is necessary to begin the restoration of confidence between the parties," he said.

The Ukrainian minister stressed that the Permanent Representative of Ukraine participates in the women's negotiations and meetings on prevention of tension as the OSCE representative.
