Iranian gas can’t replace Armenia’s supply from Russia, minister says

Iranian gas cannot be an alternative to Russian gas for Armenia, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Armenia Armen Movsisyan said at the forum 'The Future of the Armenian energy sector: energy conservation and renewable energy' organized by the U.S. Embassy on May 22, ARCA reported.

"The price of Iranian gas is higher than the price offered by Russia, therefore, Iranian gas can not serve as an alternative," Movsisyan said responding to a question about Armenia's dependence on Russian gas and the reasons for which the Armenian government has not established an alternative.

The minister also noted that before the end of the negotiations with Russia on gas prices, the rate of $180 will remain unchanged, and the problem can be solved as a result of the discussions in the government.

Commenting on the talks that Iran-Armenia gas pipeline has been transferred to the company HayRusGasArd allegedly under the pressure from Russia, Movsisyan said that there was no pressure.

"Such pressure has never existed. The pipeline's operation requires respective structures which positions HayRusGasArd company had. It was pointless to recreate them," the minister said adding that the government did not sell the pipeline but rather leased it.
