Delegates of the UN General Assembly's 67th session have adopted the resolution on the transit of energy carriers on the initiative of Turkmenistan, the UN News Center reported on May 17.

The document intends the development of international cooperation in ensuring reliable transportation of energy carriers on the international markets via pipelines and by using other delivery systems. More than 70 states acted as coauthors of the document.

Introducing the resolution at the UN General Assembly's session, the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Aksoltan Atayeva thanked all the delegations for their support.

The ambassador stressed that providing of universal access to energy is the basis for the creation of jobs, the maintenance of security, control over the climate change, the food supply and, finally, for strengthening of economy and achievement of equality.

The purposes of the resolution are conformable with the initiative of UN Secretary General "Sustainable Energy for All".

Atayeva underlined that one of the major problems in providing access to basic energy carriers is an efficient and reliable transportation of energy among the countries, regions and continents.

"Turkmenistan, being one of the major suppliers of energy, and possessing the fourth-largest reserves of hydrocarbon resources in the world, has consistently advocated for the creation of stable and reliable systems of international energy deliveries, development of schemes and models of interaction on the global energy markets, which are able to correspond to the contemporary realities," the Turkmen representative noted.

The resolution underlines the growing role of transport knots in ensuring of stable transportation of energy carriers on the international markets.

Furthermore, the delegates with satisfaction noted the proposal of the Turkmen government to convene in early 2014 an international expert meeting devoted to the implementation of solutions of the conference of high level on the topic "Reliable and stable transit of energy carriers and its role in providing a sustainable development and international cooperation" held in Ashgabat on April 23, 2009.

Turkmenistan is one of the key players in the energy market in the resource-rich Caspian region. It produces about 70-80 billion cubic meters of gas a year. Each year it exports raw materials to Russia, China and Iran. The Central Asian state has the world's fourth largest natural gas reserves after Russia, Iran and Qatar.

The largest gas resources in the country are concentrated in the Mary region in eastern Turkmenistan, including Galkynysh field.

The Galkynysh gas field is recognized as the second largest deposit in the world with reserves of 26.2 trillion cubic meters. It will be commissioned in the summer of 2013.

The Turkmengeologiya State Concern reported that the country has 38 oil and 82 gas condensate fields and 153 gas fields, including 142 onshore fields and 11 fields on its sea shelf.
