Iran's Guardian Council extends time for studying presidential candidates' registrations
Iran's Guardian Council has extended the time given for studying
the presidential candidates' registrations, ISNA news agency
reported.
"The Guardian Council has sent a letter to the Interior Ministry,
noting that it would require 5 more days to study the
registrations, and we were given this time, according to the law,"
spokesman of the council, Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei, said.
He noted that the Guardian Council will unveil the final list of
those qualified presidential hopefuls on May 21.
Official registration of candidates for Iran's upcoming
presidential elections started on May 7, and will last until May
11.
After the presidential candidates are approved by the Guardian
Council, they will be officially publicized by Iran's Interior
Ministry.
After the candidates have been determined, the pre-election
campaigns would begin on May 24, and end on June 12.
Iran will hold the 11th presidential election on June 14.
The voters will select the successor of the current President
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is not able to participate in the
elections for the third term according to the country's
constitutional laws.
The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national
election and the Guardian Council vets the candidates for
qualifications.
