Georgia launches project to build wind power stations
By Sabina Idayatova
Work on building wind power stations has been launched in Georgia,
Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze told media on Wednesday.
"We have already started preparations for using the wind power stations. The operation of the stations in the pilot mode will begin presumably next year," he said.
Kaladze said the project is expected to be implemented in the Kartli and Samtskhe-Javakheti regions at the initial phase.
Wind power engineering is a promising and competitive technology. According to estimates, the share of wind power stations in the overall world power engineering will be 10 percent by 2025.
Studies conducted on the territory of Georgia have revealed some suitable areas for the construction of wind power plants.
The country has significant potential to generate wind energy, and 4 billion kilowatt-hours per year of electricity could be produced using this technology.
The Georgian regions with power generation potential include the mountainous areas of southern Georgia, the southern part of Javakheti, the Gagra mountain range, Kolkheti Valley and Eastern Georgian lowlands, etc.
