OSCE mulls Caspian Sea maritime security in Turkmenistan
The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has held a roundtable discussion on the Caspian Sea maritime security in the Turkmen capital Ashgabat.
National experts from several Caspian littoral countries considered the effective mechanisms to prevent incidents and emergency situations at sea borders, the OSCE office in Ashgabat said on Thursday.
Moreover, participants examined the effective mechanisms for monitoring maritime borders. Delegates included officers of the Maritime and Coast Guard, customs officers from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan, as well as representatives of the OSCE secretariat.
"The purpose of the current meeting is to assist in ensuring coordinated action to strengthen maritime security and promote cross-border cooperation in the Caspian Sea area," head of the OSCE centre in Ashgabat Ivo Petrov said.
He said that the dialogue started between the participants during the event will contribute to further cooperation between them and their countries.
OSCE Conflict Prevention Centre Senior Border Issues advisor Penny Satches-Brohs said that the cooperation between the countries of the Caspian Sea area can become a model of effective inter-state and inter-agency cooperation which will contribute to the effective prevention of incidents and conflicts.
The participants also discussed the best experience to prevent and regulate the conflicts and incidents in managing safety at maritime borders, as well as effective mechanisms for monitoring them.
