U.S. consulates in Russia resume issuing visas

The issuance of visas was resumed by all American consulates in Russia, including St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Vladivostok.

At the moment, visas in these three consulates are issued with restrictions - only to those citizens who do not need to pass an interview, according to the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Gazeta.ru reported.

“On September 1, 2017, the U.S. Embassy in Moscow resumed a limited number of interviews for non-immigrant visas. The process of issuing American visas in cases where applicants are not required to be interviewed is carried out both at the U.S. Embassy in Russia and in the U.S. consulates in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Vladivostok," Embassy’s spokeswoman Maria Olson said.

Those who have already obtained an American visa earlier and now apply for a new visa of the same type are not required to pass interview. There is one more condition – no longer than one year should pass since the expiration date of the previous visa in the U.S.

In late July 2017, following another round of U.S. sanctions against Russia, Moscow ordered the U.S. to reduce the number of its diplomatic and technical staff in Russia to 455 people.

In response, the U.S. embassy in Moscow announced that non-immigrant visas will no longer be issued in the three U.S. consulates across the country, beginning on August 23. As of September 1, the only place Russians can interview for U.S. visas is at the embassy in Moscow.
