Ashgabat, Islamabad eye TAPI gas pipeline project

Turkmenistan’s President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov met with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif during his visit to Pakistan, the Turkmen government said in a message March 2.
Berdimuhamedov visited the Pakistani capital to take part in the Summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
During the meeting, the Turkmen president spoke about prospects of cooperation during the construction of the Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline, according to the message.
Berdimuhamedov noted the wide prospects of cooperation between Turkmenistan and Pakistan, in partnership with which big joint projects are being implemented, firstly, on construction of the continent’s biggest energy route – TAPI pipeline – that will serve for the region’s social and economic development.
It was noted that Turkmenistan sees Pakistan as its major partner in expanding cooperation with countries of South Asia.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed the directions of mutually beneficial partnership in various spheres, including trade and economy, fuel and energy, construction, agriculture.
Construction of the Turkmen section of TAPI was launched on Dec. 13, 2015.
The annual capacity of the gas pipeline will reach 33 billion cubic meters.
The total length of the TAPI pipeline will be 1,814 kilometers. A 214-kilometer section of the pipeline will run through Turkmenistan, a 774-kilometer section will run through Afghanistan and an 826-kilometer section will run through Pakistan.
