Turkish General Staff: over 8,000 servicemen took part in coup attempt

The General Staff of Turkish Armed Forces has revealed that 8,651 servicemen of the armed forces participated in the military coup attempt in the country.

“Only 1.5 percent of the servicemen of the country’s armed forces, that’s to say, a minimum number of the servicemen participated in the coup attempt in Turkey,” said the statement of the General Staff.

The rebels used 35 planes, 37 helicopters, 246 tanks and three vessels during the military coup attempt in Turkey.

On July 15 evening, Turkish authorities said a military coup attempt took place in the country. Meanwhile, a group of servicemen announced about transition of power to them.

However, the rebelling servicemen started to surrender on July 16 and Turkish authorities said the coup attempt failed. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the death toll as a result of the military coup attempt stood at 246 people excluding the coup plotters and over 2,000 people were wounded.

Erdogan declared a three-month state of emergency in Turkey on July 20.
