The stage 2 of Petlim container terminal, invested by Azerbaijan’s energy giant SOCAR, was launched on September 19.

The completed container terminal has doubled the capacity of port located near the city of Izmir, Aliaga region. The new port was built in two stages and $450 million has been spent for the construction. It includes 700 meters of linear berth, 42 hectares of container storage area, 150 meters cargo and cargo ferry.

The overall construction of Petlim took 8.5 million man-hours. The 16 meters deep facility will serve vessels of 16,000 TUE capacity. Total of 600 workers will be employed in the container terminal.

Petlim is the third largest port in Turkey and the largest port in the Turkish part of the Aegean Sea. SOCAR owns a 70 percent share in the port, while Goldman Sachs has the rest 30 per cent stake.

The work on the first stage of the Petlim port’s construction was completed in December 2016 and the cargo terminal with the capacity of 1.5 million TEUs (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit) has started commercial operations.

Dutch APM Terminals will run the port for the next 28 years.

APM Terminals is lifting global trade with a Global Terminal Network of 20,000 professionals with 76 operating port and terminal facilities and 117 Inland Services operations in 59 countries around the globe. APM Terminals designs, builds and operates port and terminal facilities, as well as providing cargo Inland Services for cargo transportation between port facilities and inland locations, as well as other associated cargo handling functions.

SOCAR is 100 percent owned by the government of Azerbaijan. SOCAR participates in joint ventures (including ventures in Georgia and Turkey), consortia, and operating companies established with SOCAR’s participation.

Currently, SOCAR is the only producer of petroleum products in the country, and operates more than 370 petrol stations in Switzerland, Georgia, Romania and Ukraine.

The company includes such production associations as Azneft (the enterprises producing oil and gas onshore and offshore), Azerikimya (the chemical enterprises) and Azerigas (distributor of gas produced in the country), as well as oil and gas processing plants, service companies, and the facilities involved in geophysical and drilling operations.
