PM: Gas supplies from Azerbaijan – priority for Bulgaria

Gas supplies from Azerbaijan and construction of the Balkan gas hub are of priority for Bulgaria’s energy sector.

Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov made the remarks during the 22nd World Petroleum Congress in Istanbul on July 10.

“Creation of Balkan gas hub, which will allow to achieve diversification in trade and transportation of gas, is very important for the future development of the country,” he said.

“There are at least 3 sources of gas supplies to the Balkan hub: gas that can come from Romania, gas, which can come from Russia and has been agreed the delivery of 1 billion cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan,” Borisov said.

The Shah Deniz 2 gas of Azerbaijan will be delivered to Bulgaria through the Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB).

IGB is expected to be connected to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline via which gas from the Shah Deniz field will be delivered to the European markets.

He went on to say that Bulgaria counts on gas supplies from the Caspian region, adding that Bulgaria is working fast and actively on new gas pipeline projects - the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) through Bulgaria and Serbia - and their technical implementation.

As part of the Stage 2 of development of the Shah Deniz field, the gas will be exported to Turkey and European markets by expanding the South Caucasus Pipeline and the construction of TANAP and TAP.

The reserve of Shah Deniz field is estimated at 1.2 trillion cubic meters of gas and 240 million tons of condensate.

Shah Deniz Stage 2 will add a further 16 billion cubic meters per year (bcma) of gas production to the approximately 9 bcma produced by Shah Deniz Stage 1.
