Azerbaijan, Egypt mull co-op

The importance of elevating cooperative relations between Azerbaijan and Egypt to a high level in bilateral, multilateral as well as regional formats, and the necessity of always keeping development of these ties in attention was high on the agenda of talks held between Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliyev and a delegation led by Governor of Egypt's Southern Sinai province, Khaled Fouda on May 27.

Expressing confidence that the visit of the Egyptian delegation will be fruitful, President Aliyev said it will create good opportunities for them to closely familiarize themselves with the country.

Saying the two countries' people have great respect for each other, the head of state underlined the significance of this visit in terms of defining new areas of cooperation.

Fouda, for his part, conveyed greetings on behalf of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi to President Aliyev.

He congratulated the Azerbaijani president on the occasion of May 28 – Republic Day and said Azerbaijan is the leading country in the region, adding that under the leadership of President Aliyev the country played an important role in expanding interreligious and intercultural dialogue in the world and strengthening stability and security in the region.

Praising the organization of the first European Games in Azerbaijan, Fouda noted the importance of the decision to hold the Islamic Solidarity Games in the country in 2017.

As part of his visit to Baku, Fouda met with Azerbaijan's Economy and Industry Minister, Shahin Mustafayev where the governor of Egypt’s South Sinai province put forward a proposal on opening a direct air service between Baku and Sharm el-Sheikh.

Saying that both countries have great potential in the tourism field, Fouda noted Egypt is interested in expanding its relations with Azerbaijan.

He proposed to hold Azerbaijani week in Egypt, and invited Shahin Mustafayev to take part in the economic forums to be held in Egypt in November 2015 and in 2016.

Mustafayev, for his part said that the relations between the two countries have developed successfully and that the current visit of the Egyptian delegation will contribute to the further development of relations.

He said the countries cooperate in humanitarian and energy fields and stressed the possibility of cooperating in the fields of agriculture, tourism, industry, alternative energy.

Egypt and Azerbaijan have had relations which date back to centuries ago but since the last century they have developed closer contacts. Egyptians and Azerbaijanis have much in common: traditions, culture, customs, attitudes and religion. Since Azerbaijan has gained its independence in 1991, the two countries have started building relations in the political, economic, cultural and educational spheres.

Egypt recognized Azerbaijan's independence in December 1991 and diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in March 1992.
