Azerbaijani gymnast bagged a silver medal at the 2014 European Women's Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

The competitions were held in Bulgaria on May 12-18.

Azerbaijan's Gymnastics Federation (AGF) said Anna Pavlova came out second in exercising with vault, gaining 14.583 points and leaving Romanian Larisa Iordache behind with 14.533 points. Swiss Giulia Steingruber won in this category, gaining 14.666 points.

"I am very glad that I was able to win the European Championship medal in the first year of my performance for the Azerbaijani team," the gymnast told the AGF. "I could win the gold medal, but the Swiss competitor did both jumps better than me. But I'm not upset. The main thing is that I completed coach's instructions and confirmed my high status as the gymnast after a break. As for the plans, like the whole team I will prepare myself for the World Cup, which will be held in China in late 2014."

Pavlova said she hoped the team would perform even better than in the European Championships. After the World Cup, the whole team will start intensive training for the first European Games in Baku, the gymnast said.

"I express my gratitude to the leadership of Azerbaijan's Gymnastics Federation for having believed in me and given me a second chance at the sport," she added.

Azerbaijan was also represented by Sabina Bashirova and Rza Aliyev as judges at the championships.

The silver medal became the first in the history of the gymnastics of the independent Azerbaijan. Previously, Azerbaijani gymnast Valery Belenky won several medals at World and European championships and Olympics for the USSR team.

Earlier, Anna Pavlova won the Artistic Gymnastics World Cup held in Slovenia.

Pavlova made it to two of the four possible finals -in balance beam and uneven bars. Azerbaijan's second gymnast Marina Nekrasova also competed in two finals and took fourth place twice.
