Azerbaijani embassy to resume normal activity in Egypt

The Azerbaijani Embassy in Egypt will soon resume its normal activity, spokesman for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Elman Abdullayev told media.

"After the situation deteriorated in Egypt in late August, the Azerbaijani embassy staff and their families were evacuated from the country," he said. "Currently, the embassy is not fully up and working that is the activity is being carried out by an ambassador and a diplomat."

Abdullayev said the Azerbaijani embassy staff in Syria moved to Lebanon and continues to operate in Beirut where the diplomatic mission of the country has been also accredited.

"Azerbaijan's position on Syria remains unchanged," he said. "Consultations within the UN General Assembly are underway. Baku stands against the use of chemical weapons there."

On August 21, media outlets reported the large scale use of chemical weapons in the vicinity of Damascus with more than 600 victims.

Clashes between government forces and the armed opposition have been continuing in Syria for over two years. According to UN statistics, the total number of victims killed in the conflict is more than 100,000. Syrian authorities say they are opposed by well-armed militants.
