Blazing sunset at the Caspian Sea has inspired many to write poems, paint pictures or grab cameras to take pictures.

The largest inland lake in the world, the vast, enigmatic Caspian Sea has long captured the imagination of mankind and has been the birthplace of legends, myths, and numerous mysteries for thousands of years. The ancient Assyrians believed that the lake was from whence the sun rose and set, and the legends of numerous ancient civilizations of the region have been influenced and shaped by this mysterious body of water.

The Caspian Sea is truly a remarkable sight to behold. At 1,200 km long, 320 km wide, and with a surface area of approximately 371,000 km2, it is the largest completely enclosed body of water on Earth. The Caspian Sea is home to about 141 fish species.

The Sea is shared between five countries - Iran, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. The sea receives water from the Volga, Ural and the Kura rivers and numerous other freshwater inputs, but has no outlet to the world's oceans. The Volga River, the largest in Europe, is the source of 80% of the Caspian's freshwater inflow.

August 12 marks the Day of the Caspian Sea aimed at raising awareness over protection of the Caspian Sea.

The Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea, also known as the Tehran Convention, entered into force on August 12, 2006.

The Convention, which was the first regional legally binding agreement signed and ratified by all five Caspian littoral states, aims at protecting the Caspian Sea from all sources of pollution and at preserving and restoring its biological resources for present and future generations.

To mark the day, the Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry of Azerbaijan organized a number of events.

Environmental problems of the Caspian Sea were discussed at a meeting organized at the ministry on August 11.

The participants of the event discussed the implementation of measures to protect the marine environment of the Caspian Sea, the conservation, restoration, sustainable and rational use of marine bioresources.

Another educational event was held at the Ministry for young people and adolescents. The participants were informed about measures for environmental protection of the Caspian sea, and the work done in this direction. The young people acquainted themselves with a modular water treatment system in Novkhani.

In addition, clean-up action was organized on the shore of the Caspian sea.
