Azerbaijan called for resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict at an international conference dedicated to Jerusalem held in Baku on July 20.

Azerbaijani Ambassador on Special Foreign Ministry Missions Shahin Abdullayev speaking at the event said that Azerbaijan stands for the speedy restoration of peace and stability in Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is extremely important from the point of view of resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, he emphasized.

"We condemn certain events that complicate and impede the settlement of the conflict, and lead to the deterioration of the Palestinians’ life," he added. “Azerbaijan thinks that this international conference in Baku will help resolve this issue."

Abdullayev went on to say that there are resolutions of the UN Security Council that condemn the occupation of the territories of the countries and it will be possible to settle conflicts if to avoid the policy of double standards.

"Our economic, cultural and humanitarian relations with Israel do not hamper us to support Palestine," he added. “Azerbaijan is doing its best to help resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and always openly declares its position on the conflict.”

The ambassador mentioned Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, saying that Azerbaijan itself has been suffering from the conflict for many years,” he said. “Twenty percent of the country's territories have been occupied by Armenia and it binds us to take a clear position on this issue," he said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.

In turn, Riyad Mansour, permanent observer of the State of Palestine to the UN, heads the Palestinian delegation at the conference, said that Palestine is grateful to Azerbaijan for the support of ‘brothers and sisters in Jerusalem’.

Mansour expressed gratitude to the Azerbaijani government for organizing an international conference on supporting Jerusalem in Baku and its position in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, noting that Azerbaijan can play a positive role in the issue of resolving the conflict.

Addressing the event, Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affair Miroslav Jenca said that the UN is ready to provide all possible support for the establishment of a Palestinian state.

He said that today the conflict, which turns 50 years since the outbreak, reached a dead end.

The settlements of the Israelis in the Gaza Strip are expanding, thus leading to the formation of an ever-widening gap between the Palestinians and the Israelis.

“It is time for concrete negotiations to find a solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, he said, adding that success depends on the political will of the parties.

Jenca added that achieving peace will be impossible without the liberation of the Palestinian territories.

Assistant Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Samir Bakr said it is necessary to ensure the practical implementation of the UN Security Council’s relevant resolutions on Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem.

“OIC renders unconditional support for the Palestinian people, including their right to establish an independent state,” he said. "We support international efforts aimed at finding a fair comprehensive solution to an important issue on the basis of relevant UN resolutions."

The organizers of the conference are the Azerbaijani government and the UN Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People.

The representatives of the Azerbaijani government and the United Nations, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) are taking part in the conference.

The panel discussions entitled "Life in East Jerusalem under occupation", "New approach to East Jerusalem", "International and regional support for East Jerusalem" will be held as part of the two-day conference.
