Azerbaijani Ambassador to Islamabad Ali Alizade had a meeting with the newly appointed Special Secretary of the Pakistani Foreign Ministry, Syed Abrar Hussain.

Alizade congratulated the Special Secretary on appointment and noted that Azerbaijan’s relations with Pakistan are of particular importance, the embassy reported.

He said that both countries, which have much in common, constantly support each other and emphasized the priority of developing ties in all areas with Pakistan.

The ambassador praised Pakistan's fair position on the occupation of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia and the aggression of Armenia against Azerbaijan.

Hussain, in turn, said that countries supporting each other such as Pakistan and Azerbaijan can be rarely found and this support has been continuing throughout history.

He stressed that Azerbaijan is a fraternal country for Pakistan and due to the occupied Azerbaijani territories it does not recognize Armenia as a state.

The work done to strengthen economic and trade relations, arrangement of mutual visits, prospects for expanding relations between cities and regions of the two countries, continuation of consultations between the foreign ministries, increasing contractual basis and other issues were also discussed during the meeting.

Pakistan is one of the oldest and closest allies and strategic partners of Azerbaijan in Asia. Pakistan was among the first countries that recognized the independence of Azerbaijan in October 1991.

Last year, a number of high-level talks and meetings were held in order to develop bilateral trade, investment making, and identify business opportunities.

In October and December 2016, respectively, Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Commerce Minister Khurram Dastgir Khan visited Baku. During their visits, the expansion of trade and economic cooperation was discussed.

Trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Pakistan amounted to $7.3 million in 2016, according to Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee.
